What Does a Hydraulic Motor Do, and How Does It Work?
The structural qualities of both hydraulic pumps and hydraulic motors are very similar. The main difference is that a hydraulic pump converts mechanical energy into fluid energy in the form of oil flow, while a hydraulic motor then comes along to convert that fluid energy back into mechanical energy for performing physical work. The two often work in tandem to deliver needed power for many hydraulic transmission systems. Like a hydraulic pump, many hydraulic motors operate according to gear & vane or piston & plunger design, but the most common type of hydraulic motor design is the gerotor or roller gerotor design.
Hydraulic motors are used in many industrial applications, including augers, mixers, conveyors, rolling mills, and mobile machineries like loaders, diggers, excavators, and drill rigs. Hydraulic motors can be used in essentially any application that might call for an electric motor, with a key advantage being the fact that hydraulic motors aren’t powered by electricity. Because of this, hydraulic motors are able to withstand more extreme environments like high-heat or completely submerged settings. But even with the above-noted distinctions, the terms “hydraulic motor” and “hydraulic pump” are often used interchangeably for many applications.
What Can Lead to Hydraulic Motor Failure?
Hydraulic motors don’t rely upon electricity as a power source, so they provide some unique features and advantages. But since these devices are driven by high-pressure fluids in often extreme environments, there are still potential problems which can develop. Here are some of the more common issues we see with hydraulic motors in our industrial repair work at AES.
Air or water contamination
A large percentage of hydraulic failures come as a result of air and/or water contamination. Air contamination comes in the form of both aeration and cavitation; both can lead to premature wear of hydraulic components, resulting in severe damage to the system. Water contamination can happen as a result of condensation or leaky seals; water will degrade hydraulic components over time through oxidation and freeze damage.
Extreme temperatures
Even though some hydraulic systems are engineered to function in extreme environments, hydraulic systems which run too hot or too cold for long periods of time can still result in problems. Excess heat can cause hydraulic fluids to thin, preventing needed lubrication and also making the fluid more likely to leak. Heat can also lead to oxidation in hydraulic fluids, compromising their performance capabilities. And low temperatures can make it harder for oils to cycle, putting systems under undue loads.
Quality & levels of fluid
Low fluid levels and improper filtration can result in air contamination or temperature problems. High fluid levels can produce too much pressure for the system, producing leaks. And it’s also incredibly important to use the correct type of fluid for your specific application, as well.
Installation problems & human errors
Human error is another common cause of hydraulic system problems. Improper installation of any component can result in severe damage. Incompatible or mismatched parts are another recipe for problems. And improper maintenance or excessive usage beyond operational capabilities can also result in real damage to your system.
